Root Canals

Root canals are important restorative procedures that can often save critically damaged teeth. If you are experiencing a toothache or any other symptoms of dental infection, this procedure can ease your discomfort and renew your dental function. Root canals have a negative reputation, and many patients believe that they will be long, unpleasant procedures. However, at Value Dental Centers in Gilbert, AZ, we use very gentle techniques. These methods, combined with our local anesthesia, mean that your procedure will involve very little discomfort. Plus, we utilize state-of-the-art technology, so we can often complete your entire treatment in one appointment.

Candidates for Root Canals

Most frequently, we will recommend root canal therapy, or endodontic treatment, to address dental infection. Infection will develop when a cavity goes undiagnosed. Bacteria can enter your tooth through the tiny opening, eventually making their way down to the soft pulp in the center. This tissue contains blood vessels and nerve endings, so an infection can lead to a significant toothache. In some cases, the soft tissues will darken as they die, giving your tooth a gray tint. Additionally, your nerves run from the center of your tooth down through your root canals. As infection spreads, bacteria will move along those nerves, producing radiating pain in your jaw. In some cases, discomfort can even cause pain across your face and into your ears. Eventually, small sores, or abscesses, can develop at the tips of your tooth roots. If you experience any of these symptoms, root canal therapy is likely a good option for you.

A root canal can sometimes be a good option for a cracked tooth, as well. The crack will expose your dental nerve, causing significant discomfort. On the other hand, if the crack goes all the way to your roots, we will need to perform an extraction.

Your Root Canal Procedure

Prior to your root canal, your dentist will numb your tooth and gums. With these medications, your root canal will involve minimal discomfort, and it will typically be comparable to receiving a dental filling. First, your dentist will clean out your tooth. Through a small access chamber, he or she will remove infected pulp and bacteria. Your dentist will also reshape your root canals and the inside of your tooth in preparation for a soft filling. Next, your practitioner will take digital impressions of your tooth with a chairside scanner. The images will upload to a milling machine, which will produce a realistic dental crown, usually in about an hour. When you visit other practices, you will need to make at least two appointments for root canal therapy. At Value Dental Centers, you will enjoy full dental function in just one appointment.

Are Root Canals Really Beneficial?

Some patients question the need for root canal therapy. They wonder if it would not be easier simply to extract the infected tooth. However, extraction is a multi-stage treatment since you will then need to receive appropriate restorative care. Additionally, though our dental restorations are quite strong, nothing can approach the strength and longevity of your natural teeth. Therefore, by saving your tooth, root canal therapy can protect your dental health for many years.
